Een Range Rover in een perfecte originele conditie is een bijzonder interessante investering. De Britse oer-SUV wordt door steeds meer klassiekerliefhebbers op de juiste waarde geschat en in de armen gesloten. Door de groeiende vraag zit in de waarde van een klassieke Range Rover duidelijk een stijgende lijn. Wat eigenlijk ook niet zo vreemd is, als je kijkt naar de vele talenten en kwaliteiten die de offroader heeft.
In tegenstelling tot zoveel hedendaagse SUV’s, is de Range Rover nooit ontworpen voor uiterlijk vertoon of ontwikkeld voor rijeigenschappen van sportwagenniveau. De Range Rover is altijd authentiek gebleven. Zijn iconische vormgeving komt voort uit doelmatigheid en doordachte oplossingen. Een auto met de hoogstaande terreinkwaliteiten en onverschrokkenheid van een Land Rover – de ‘Best 4x4xfar’ – maar met het rijcomfort en de uitstraling van een stijlvolle limousine.
De Range Rover die wij in de collectie van Peet Classics hebben opgenomen, werd gebouwd in 1981. Een jaargang waarin de meest pure verschijningsvorm van de Range Rover nog niet was geplastificeerd. De auto profiteert echter wel van allerlei technische verbeteringen en modificaties, die sinds de introductie van de Range Rover in 1969 stelselmatig zijn door doorgevoerd om de kwaliteiten van de auto naar een nog hoger niveau te tillen.
De auto vormt de overbrugging tussen de functionele beginjaren – toen het interieur bijvoorbeeld werd bekleed met kwetsbaar kunststof – en de latere periode van weldadige aankleding die met de komst van de Range Rover Vogue en LSE werd doorgevoerd. Het interieur van de auto is nog steeds zeer doelmatig, maar de stoelen zijn bekleed met robuuste maar zachte velours. Het zitcomfort spat ervan af!
Naar hedendaagse Range Rover-maatstaven is de uitrusting van dit sneeuwwitte exemplaar uit 1981 sober. De unieke rijbeleving moet echter niet worden gezocht in lange lijsten met accessoires en opsmuk. Je bent letterlijk boven het verkeer verheven, door de hoge comfortabele zitpositie en het formaat van de ramen. Ook daar hebben ze bij Land Rover heel goed nagedacht, toen de Range Rover werd ontwikkeld. Een duidelijke overzichtelijkheid is natuurlijk vooral op onverharde paden en greenlanes essentieel. Die vierkante vormen op de voorste hoeken van de motorkap zijn geen speelse design-elementen, maar puur bedoeld als grensmarkering van de neus.
Luxe ervaar je ook wanneer je de V8-motor start. Zoals bekend, werd het 3,5-liter blok oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld door Buick, maar door de Britten geschikt geacht om toe te passen in de statige limousines van Rover. Zijn Amerikaanse oorsprong is moeilijk te herkennen, althans niet uit de klankkleur die deze iconische motor ten gehore brengt. Wat je wel hoort, is hoe smeuïg de achtcilinder zijn koppel opbouwt, ideaal voor het trekken van een paardentrailer of een motorjacht – en perfect voor in het zware terrein.
Op de weg is de Range Rover een rustgevende auto. De V8 laat zich niet opjagen, het onderstel is merkbaar toegespitst op het zware offroadwerk. Zoek je een auto die vlijmscherp stuurt en elke bocht horizontaal doorheen gejaagd kan worden, dan is de Range Rover sowieso geen optie. Dit is een auto waarin je bochten met terughoudendheid benadert, en met een eerbiedige V8-bariton achter je laat.
Veel klassieke Range Rovers hebben in hun bestaan hard moeten werken, maar dat is deze witte Range Rover beslist niet aan te zien. Het koetswerk, het interieur, de motorruimte, de techniek: alles is in perfecte staat. En zo rijdt de auto ook. Er zijn weinige Range Rovers die de kwaliteit van dit exemplaar weten te benaderen. A Range Rover in a perfect original condition is an interesting investment. During the years, the world’s first SUV is appreciated and embraced by more and more classic enthusiasts. Due to a growing demand, the value of a classic Range Rover is clearly on the rise. Which is actually not that strange, when you look at the many talents and qualities of the off-roader.
Unlike so many of today's SUVs, the Range Rover was never designed for ostentation or engineered for a sports car-like handling. The Range Rover has always remained authentic. Its iconic design stems from efficiency and well thought-out solutions. A car with the off-road capability and fearlessness of a Land Rover - the 'Best 4x4xfar' - but with the ride and look of a stylish limousine.
The Range Rover that we have added to our collection was built in 1981. A year in which the purest appearance of the Range Rover had not yet been plasticised. However, during the years, the car has benefited from all kinds of technical improvements and modifications, which have been systematically implemented since the introduction of the Range Rover in 1970 to raise the car's qualities to an even higher level.
Built in 1981, this Range Rover bridges the functional early years - when the interior was covered with fragile plastic, for example - and the later period of benevolent decoration that was implemented with the arrival of the Range Rover Vogue and LSE. The interior of the car is still very functional, but the seats are upholstered in robust but soft velour. When you are looking for a comfortable classic car, you don’t have to search any further!
By today’s standards, the equipment of this snow-white 1981 example is austere. However, the unique driving experience should not be sought in long lists of accessories and finery. You are literally elevated above traffic, due to the high comfortable seating position and the huge size of the windows. At Land Rover, the technicians thought very carefully when developing the Range Rover. A clear overview is of course essential, especially on unpaved paths and green lanes. Those square shapes on the front corners of the bonnet are not playful design elements, but purely intended to mark the boundaries of the nose.
You also experience luxury when you start the V8 engine. As is known, the 3.5-liter block was originally developed by Buick, but was considered suitable by the British for use in Rover's stately limousines. Its American origins are difficult to recognize, at least not from the timbre that this iconic engine produces. What you do hear is how smooth the eight-cylinder builds up its torque, ideal for towing a trailer or a motor yacht - and perfect for the rough terrain.
On the road, the Range Rover is a restful car. The V8 does not let itself be rushed, the chassis is noticeably geared to heavy off-road work. If you are looking for a car that steers as a razor and keeps horizontally in every corner, then the Range Rover is not an option anyway. This is a car in which you approach corners with restraint, and exit with a reverent V8 baritone.
Many classic Range Rovers have had to work hard in their existence, but this white Range Rover certainly does not show that. The bodywork, the interior, the engine compartment, the technology: everything is like new. There are few Range Rovers that can approach the quality of this copy.
